First let me tell you what strings are, they are tiny bits of energy which vibrate constantly. An artistic impression is shown in the picture above. This theory says that everything in the universe including forces are made of strings.
Albert Einstein contradicted the earlier assumption of the universe saying that it was static and it could warp and stretch. He also described strange structures called wormholes. Wormholes are described as structures connecting two distant regions of space creating cosmic shortcuts. To create a wormhole you have to rip a hole in the fabric of space.

Though Einsteins laws it is impossible to rip a hole in the fabric of the cosmos, but string theory is proving it wrong.
At the quantum level the fabric of space is random and chaotic ie. rips and tears were common, now what's interesting is - rips and tears can cause cosmic explosions.
Strings prevent this from happening. When a single string passes through space, it creates a tube which acts like a bubble and surrounds the tear and acts as a protective layer. This implies that strings actually make it possible for space to rip.
People like you and I have trouble visualising 3 dimensions but then string theory requires 10 dimensions, now who would believe that ? This is one of the many reasons why pioneers of string theory worked alone.
Olden physicists thought that particles inside atoms were point sized but then quarks were discovered, now string theory tells us that quarks are made of tiny vibrating strings.
The idea of string theory was a unified theory of everything.
Then an unexpected and unusual problem occurred, we didn't just produce one string theory but five ! The theories had some things in common but their mathematical definitions seemed different.
In 1995 scientists of string theory met at the university of Southern California for their annual conference. A certain scientist called Ed Witten was to give the opening speech

Ed solved and analysed all the five theories and came at a remarkable conclusion, all the five theories were the same ! They were just explained in five different ways. Like this Witten had unified string theory and it was given another name M-Theory though nobody knows what M stands for, one of the wildest guesses include an inverted W for Witten.
